2021 QLD Boulder Opens & Masters

Thank you for your support of the 2021 Pinnacle Sport QLD Open & Masters Bouldering titles.

This event would not have been possible without you.

Saturday and Sunday saw the return of climbing competitions to Queensland and the excitement was palpable at Flow Bouldering in Forest Glen. It has been a long 20 months since the last QLD Open Bouldering titles in 2019 and competitors were thrilled to return.

Saturday saw the Open B, Masters, and Paraclimbing categories compete in a 2 hour “Boulderjam” qualifier. Highlights included Emily Amies’s first foray in Masters; topping all 5 of her qualifying problems in only a total of 6 attempts (pictured).

The “5 on 5 off” format finals were fierce with Matt Fingleton finally achieving the top podium in Master Males after placing 2nd and 3rd in previous competitions. You can read about his journey in the Sunshine Coast Daily HERE

Winners of the Open B included Rose Mosley for the females and Ciaran Huang-Ryan for the males. Eddie Sparks, a stalwart competitor of every climbing competition she can find, won the Paraclimbing category after an admirable attempt on the 7 difficult problems presented to her in qualifications.

Sunday dawned to a closed roller door at Flow Bouldering as Open A competitors went directly into isolation to compete in a World Cup qualifying round. The Open A Males starting list was particularly strong with 32 competitors including Tom O’Halloran the first Australian Male Olympic Qualifying climber.

Qualifying sets were particularly challenging for both categories, however no problem went untopped. In an exciting shakeup, Youth competitors Atako Nakamura and Clea Hall placed in 2nd and 3rd respectively at the end of qualifications in Open A Female. Atako being just 13 was not able to qualify for finals, however was invited to compete in the finals as a guest, allowing Feli Vernen her spot in the official starting list. Open A Finals were extremely close, with both Male and Female winners being determined by the number of attempts to top the final climbs.

Open A Male competition winner went to Tom O’Halloran while the Queensland champion was won by Sam Bowman. Open A Female competition winner and Queensland champion went to Sarah Reynolds.
